On Friday, when star striker Didier Drogba broke his arm in a warm up game against Japan, any opportunity Ivory Coast had of making a serious run in World Cup betting may have ended.

Drogba is expected to miss at a minimum some of the World Cup and the likelihood of Ivory Coast even making it out of the group stage in World Cup odds are now doubtful.

Despite the fact that Ivory Coast is in a challenging group with Brazil and Portugal, they’re listed by World Cup betting odds as a definite contender. It is not likely that Ivory Coast will have sufficient scoring to reach the round of sixteen devoid of Drogba in the lineup. Drogba was injured in Ivory Coast’s 2- victory over Japan. He was harmed after a high challenge by Japan’s Marcus Tulio Tanaka. Though their coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was not entirely ruling Drogba out of competition, the squad said that Drogba fractured his right arm. There is a chance Drogba might still play since he had surgery over the weekend.

Drogba got 29 goals this season for Chelsea and Ivory Coast was deemed a menace in Group G due to the fact of his scoring ability. Devoid of Drogba’s scoring it appears not likely Ivory Coast are likely to win their starting game against Portugal on June 15th. The World Cup odds on Ivory Coast were dropping and were as low as 23-1 to win it all. Now that Drogba is out, look for those odds to increase. Also watch for the odds on the Ivory Coast matches to be modified a little bit. Portugal was already the favorite in the opening game against Ivory Coast, with the news that Drogba is out of the game, those World Cup betting odds may go up a little bit.

Friday was not an excellent day for star players since England’s captain Rio Ferdinand was injured during training in Rustenburg, South Africa. Italy discovered that midfielder Andrea Pirlo has an injured calf on Friday as well, and his status is questionable. U.S. striker Jozy Altidore has a sprained right ankle and his status is up in the air and even Brazil goaltender Julio Cesar has been managing a back injury. The World Cup has already lost a number of high profile players. As well as Drogba, other players who are injured and out of the world cup include England’s David Beckham, Germany’s Michael Ballack and Ghana’s Michael Essien.

The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11th and is expected to play through July 11th. An African nation will be hosting the World Cup for the first time ever this year. Morocco and Egypt were trumped by South Africa for the honor. The FIFA World Cup is held once every 4 years and features 32 teams from different countries competing against each other for the championship in football. This event has in the past been dominated by Brazil, which holds a record 5 championships and is the only squad to have competed in every tournament. The current champion is Italy, which has won the championship 4 times total. The next World Cup will be held in 2014 in Brazil.
